-- JCI India President T V N Murthy.

During his visit to JCI India on July 16-19, JCI President Kevin Cullinane was encouraged to find a group of enthusiastic and effective JCI Members who are excelling in leadership development while solving problems faced by local communities.

Helping Educate Tsunami Victims

After arriving in Madras, India, JCI President Kevin Cullinane registered in a hotel in Chennai and then traveled by car for three hours to a site where a school for tsunami-affected children will be built. With a traditional band in the background and a floral welcome, Cullinane went to the dais, sat with local government officials, and then addressed a gathering of 350 people.

After a formal welcome by JCI India President T V N Murthy, Cullinane lit the "lamp of light" and laid the foundation stone for the school building. Local JCI Members will coordinate the building of this school. JCI Treasurer Harish Kumar translated Cullinane's inspiring address to the local language, Tamil.

Cullinane praised the activities of JCI India Members and their efforts to serve such a noble cause -- helping deserving needy children. He mentioned that in Dublin a few days before, $10,000 had been donated for the tsunami-affected areas of India and Sri Lanka. "JCI India must continue its outstanding work," said Cullinane.

JCI President Cullinane and JCI India President Murthy planted and watered saplings in the campus of the proposed school building.

VEDA, JCI India's Premier Training Program

On July 17, in Hyderabad, in the south of India, an excited gathering of more than 100 JCI Members welcomed JCI President Cullinane, who was accompanied by JCI India President Murthy. In a 25-car entourage, they arrived at the Aalankrita Resorts, the venue of VEDA (Vision Enhancement Desire Application).

JCI Hyderabad New Dimension, the Local Organization hosting VEDA, welcomed JCI President Cullinane in Indian style, adorning him with a garland of fresh lilies and a turban, symbolic of the respect due to an honored guest. VEDA was conducted with Sunil Kumar as Head Trainer.

Addressing the 84 VEDA participants, Cullinane discussed JCI's mission and opportunities for individual development and organizational growth. In his address, entitled "Broadband your Benchmark," he said that Marketing and Media will help achieve Membership growth. He urged Local Presidents and JCI Members in general to focus on growth and development.

Media Representatives and Local Members

In the afternoon, at a press conference, Cullinane addressed representatives from popular print and electronic media, both local and national.

Later on, Cullinane addressed Local Presidents and other Members of various Local Organizations of Hyderabad. An open forum ensued, in which Cullinane answered questions, including JCI plans for the future, new programs, and areas of focus. The VEDA graduation ceremony and a party took place in the evening, organized by JCI Hyderabad New Dimension.
